Helen A. Marino
Senior Attorney Advisor
Helen A. Marino has served as the First Assistant Federal Defender since 2014, assisting with the administration of the Federal Community Defender Office and the management of its lawyers and staff. Ms. Marino has been a practicing attorney in the office’s Capital Habeas Corpus Unit since 2004, and she was the Chief of that Unit from 2011 until 2014. Early in her career, she worked in the private sector and as a staff attorney for the Criminal Appeals Bureau of the Legal Aid Society of New York. In 1987, she joined the Appeals Division of The Defender Association of Philadelphia. There, Ms. Marino handled direct appeals in the Pennsylvania Superior and Supreme Courts, as well as state and federal post-conviction cases; helped train other staff attorneys; and consulted with trial staff. She earned her A.B. from Bryn Mawr College and her J.D. from the New York University School of Law.
